Convention on 'Women Reservation Bill' held

convention on 'Women Reservation Bill' at Manipur Press

In her speech, AMNM general secretary Lairenjam said
that the Women Reservation
Bill was introduced in the Lok
Sabha in 1986 but failed to pass
it.
Subsequently, the said bill
was again reintroduced in Lok
Sabha after a committee studied
the matter, but could not make
through.
With the formation of
the NDA government in 1998,
the same bill was introduced
but the House had no consensus
to enact the bill into a law, she
contended, while asserting that
BJP, Congress and Left parties
fully support to the Women
Reservation Bill.
While urging for clearing the
Bill in the ongoing Lok Sabha
session, she said that resolutions of the convention will be
sent to the Parliament through
the National Federation of Indian Movement (NFIM).
The convention adopted three
resolutions including launching
of intense protest irrespective of
political affiliation for passing
33 per cent Women Reservation
Bill in Monsoon Session; fully
support the 42 women from
Manipur who will join the mass
protest organise by NFIM from
August 1 to 9 at Jantar Mantar,
New Delhi; and formation of a
state level committee and discuss it more thoroughly to fulfil the demand.
