Ukhrul, June 25 2015 :
Insufficient monsoon rainfall across the State has put the lives of farmers at stake.
In Ukhrul, farmers doubt that the agricultural production will be able to meet the required needs of the people.
While interacting with the farmers, they said that the changing pattern of rainfall this year has delayed rice transplantation.
However, all the farming work have to be completed for timely harvest.
Therefore, lots of money have been expended in hiring more labourers.
Apam, a farmer, said that the weather continues to change unpredictably.
Though there will be light rainfall at night, daytime remains sunny.
Another farmer, Makra Vasha, stated that due to shortfall of rain, production of wild mushroom in Ukhrul has decreased drastically.
Although, an unusual climatic condition prevails in the region, no local authority concerned has initiated any awareness programme on conserving the forest and maintaining the ecological balance.
While the sudden change in the climatic behaviour has raised many questions, many are yet to be made aware that the situation can worsen if massive deforestation continues.
Due to wide availability of timber in the district, people engaging in timber business have considerably increased during the last 10-15 years.
Though it provides livelihood to many villagers, the impact of deforestation have affected the people and environment at large.
