Imphal, November 24 2018:
Lamila Institute of Disability, run by the Disability Development Association, Manipur has managed to secure a stall in the ongoing Sangai Festival at Hapta Kangjeibung, after running hither and thither.
They had set up the stall to exhibit then- handicraft items to the tourists and the people of the State, which was not easy as they have been struggling to obtain the stall.
The stall not only showcase the rich varieties of handicraft products but also depicts the potential of differently abled persons as the items displayed in the stall were made only by them.
The items include dustbins and ladies hand bags made from kouna as well as decorative and other fancy items.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Asem Jina Devi, one of the guest remarked that the handicraft items are well designed and their prices are reasonable unlike many other stalls at the festival as well as other expo, which are quite expensive.
She mentioned that it is encouraging and inspiring that the items displayed at the stall are entirely made by the differently abled persons.
Disability Development Association, Manipur general secretary Yunush Khan (who is also physically challenged handicraft artist from Oinam Sawombung) informed that he along with his differently abled friends felt compelled to form the organization and take up the art of crafting as they had a hard time earning their livelihoods.
He continued that many members in the organization were once a part of the State's Cricket team (for the disabled).
Observing that the skills of the disabled persons in the State can move far ahead if the State Government pay good attention to the disabled persons and their capacity, Yunush Khan pointed out that the disabled persons and their handicraft items also lacks proper exposure.
