Imphal, July 23 2011:
The situation along the NH 37 (previously known as NH 53) has become so pathetic that JCB dodgers will be needed soon for freight trucks to pass many sections of the highway due to the poor condition of the highway which maintenance and renovation work is being carried out by the BRTF.
According to a source, 30 freight trucks out of 265 trucks which came out from Jiribam to Imphal on July 21 have been stranded at Kambiron area due to heavy mud which stuck the trucks making them unable to go forward or backward.
Moreover, more freight vehicles are also reportedly stranded in Nungba area.
If some rainy days can make such condition along the highway, the day will not be far when the same situation of last year would prevail if the raining continues for some more days.
Vice president, Transporters and Drivers Council Th Ibohal in a statement said that people of the state are getting rice in a much cheaper rate as compared to previous years since the transporters are ferrying the rice from Jiribam along the NH 37 .
If the condition on the highway persists for some more time, then the price of rice will soon hike up in the state, he warned.
In such situation, the state government should take up initiatives and press the BRTF authority to speed up the renovation works of the highway to get rid of the problems facing by the transporters, he added.
