Imphal, November 22 2011:
The activities of the lone Central Poultry Farm of the state at Mantripukhri have stopped after the land of the farm was acquired by the state government for construction of Capitol Project.
Though a survey had been conducted at Khumbong for shifting of the poultry farm, none could say for sure when the construction work would be started.
According to some higher officials of Veterinary Department, the Central Poultry Farm had been set up in 1957.At that time, Veterinary and Agriculture used to be one Department.
After the bifurcation of the Department, the poultry farm came under the administration of Veterinary Department.
Consequently, necessary machines and equipments including an incubator, which can hatch 30,000 chicks at one time, were procured with funding from Ministry concerned of the government of India.
The said incubator has two chambers for keeping the eggs and the same would be hatched in 21 days.
The newly hatched chicks were again sold to poultry farmers.
However, the land as well as the building of the Central Poultry Farm has been taken over by the state government for setting up Capitol Project and the farm has remained defunct since December 2010 .
Although a survey had already been conducted at Khumbong for setting up the Poultry far, when the construction work would be started is not known.
While the Central Poultry Farm was in operation, poultry farmers from different parts of the state used to come here for purchasing chicks and the rate was lower than that of the chicks imported from other Indian states.
The rate at which a chick was sold at that time was Rs 21.Moreover, eggs were also supplied from the farm to the people.
Since there is great demand for chicken meat and eggs in Manipur, eggs and chicks are being imported from outside the state.
At an average, around 2 lakhs broiler chicks are brought in to Manipur from outside every month.
Revival and relocation of the defunct Central Poultry Farm would be great help in generating employment opportunities among the unemployed educated youths in the state.
