Imphal, February 22 2017:
Appreciating the establishment of an elementary school on the phumdis of Loktak Lake at the initiative of fish farmers, Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has assured that she would provide all possible help to make the school functional.
The Governor gave this assurance during an exclusive meeting with The Sangai Express at the Raj Bhavan today where her grand daughter Nadia Naem, now based in the US was also present.
Dr Najma Heptulla remarked that phumdis are one unique characteristic of Loktak Lake.
Even though it is equally important to keep the lake clean, some phumdis must be retained so that the lake does not lose its unique characteristic.
Establishment of an elementary school at Champu Khangpok village at the initiative of the All Loktak lake Fishermen's Union and the People Resource Development Association would go a long way in making formal education accessible to children living on the phumdis of Loktak Lake, Dr Najma stated.
Nadia Naem too promised to donate $500 to the school which she has already collected from her schoolmates.
She would distribute 30 schools bags, stationery items and financial aid to students of the school tomorrow.
