Imphal, August 20 2018:
Peace and Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC), Khundrakpam AC has urged the authorities concerned to serve punishment to culprits who commit crimes against women and children.
Speaking to media persons at a press meet held at Manipur Press Club today, PDCC Khundrakpam AC general secretary Thoudam Hemjit stated that different civil organisations have not been able to prevent or decrease the rapid rise of crimes against women and children, despite their tireless efforts.
Recalling a recent incident, Hemjit claimed that Pukhrihongbam Memi, d/o Goura Singh of Ikou, left her house on August 14 at around 1 pm.
When she did not return home for days, her families thought she must have eloped with a guy.
Instead she was found dead inside a sack near Lilong river on August 17, he further claimed.
Stating that such monstrous act is strongly condemned by the committee, he added that the rise in numerous cases of violence and crime against women and children which has been continuing for ages has made the State a difficult place for the people especially the women and children to live as they have been deprived of their rights to live peacefully and securely.
On the other hand, Hemjit stated that the committee will extend its solidarity to the demand made by JAC against the brutal killing of Memi, to nab the culprit(s) involved in the incident within 48 hours and urged the State Government to book the culprit(s) at the earliest.
He promised that the committee will extend its maximum support to any agitation launched by the JAC regarding the matter.
