Kangpokpi, June 17 2018:
Stagnant water/inundation in J Songtun river/Kali river near Kalikhola since Saturday morning has evoked fear of a last year's tragic flood that swept away several houses.
The eminent threat posed has prompted the Deputy Commissioner of Kangpokpi, Dr Rangitabali Waikhom, to order evacuation of residents dwelling in the low lying area of Kalapahar.
The residents have been evacuated to safety at a temporary relief facility at Kalapahar Government High School.
Kangpokpi Police and Kalapahar youth assisted the residents during the evacuation in the presence of Kaigoulal Kipgen, Jr MCS, SDC (HQ) Kangpokpi.
DC Kangpokpi has visited the relief camp and distributed relief materials and encouraged them to stay strong and extend full cooperation to the district administration.
The water accumulation at the site is due to a landslide near Kalikhola-Makuli border that has cut off a PMGSY road connecting IT Road and Kalapahar via Makuli.
The landslide has formed a damlike structure at J Songtun River as it has blocked the normal flow of the water.
Last year, stagnant water in the river burst and washed away several houses.
Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer, Kangpokpi has sent a medical team led by Dr Lalpu Haokip, MO in-charge, District Hospital Kangpokpi following the directive of DC Kangpokpi and has examined landslide victims including children of Songpekjang Nepali village at Toribari relief camp.
While reports of houses and other utilities being washed away by flood have been reported from many Sub-Divisions of the district, Bungte Chiru SDC has reported occurrence of a long fissure on the middle of the road between Charoipandongba Chiru and New Keithelmanbi owing to erosion.
The road is the only lifeline for four villages - Sadar Joute, Monbung Tongneh, Manamjang and Khoripok.
The road as of now has been sealed, said the SDC in his report.
Meanwhile, the DC has alerted and supervised all concerned line departments to coordinate and monitor situations in the district closely.
She has inspected damaged sites at Kangchup Geljang and Bungte Chiru Sub Division and taken stock of the situations.
