After pact with Govt, JAC calls off bandh

The 'JAC against the foetal killing in inhumane actions of security forces' has reached to an agreement with the government during a meeting with chief minister N Biren on Sunday and the former has called off its 24-hour shut-down with immediate effect.
The JAC had declared 24-hour shutdown on Sunday in protest against the current state of Laishram ningol Naorem ongbi Sanjita, a nine-month pregnant woman of Kakwa Naorem Leikai, who is now lying in RIMS ICU with massive brain haemorrhage after she suffered traumatic shock when a tear gas shell exploded just outside her bedroom on September 11 night.
During the shutdown, markets in Imphal city and surrounding area were closed and roads wore deserted look as protestors blocked the Singjamei-Kakwa road by burning tyres, piling boulders and debris as well as sitting in the middle of the road.
JAC members met CM Biren at the CM's secretariat around 4.30 pm during which they submitted a memorandum containing several demands.
Later, the meeting arrived at an agreement, following which the JAC called off the shutdown at 6.30 pm.
Demands mentioned in the memorandum include immediate halt to use of tear gas shells and stun grenades against public protesters, especially in densely populated areas as it has potential to inflict injuries to innocent civilians.
The government should own responsibility for injuries caused and hardships suffered by public due to excessive use of force by security.
They also demanded appropriate action against the security personnel responsible for firing tear gas shells in residential areas that affected Sanjita.
They further demanded suspension of SDPO K Sundarbala and initiate legal proceedings against her.
The JAC also asked the government to bear full responsibilities for the treatment of Naorem Sanjita and her recovery to normal life, compensation for her still-born baby, unconditional release of the arrested protestors and treatment of those injured in the protest.
Informing this to the media, JAC convenor N William said that the CM assured to fulfil their demands and also to ensure that tear gas and stun bombs are not used in residential pockets.
He further agreed to bear cost of treatment of Sanjita and initiate action against security personnel responsible for the act, release arrested protestors without any condition, as well as appropriate compensation for the still-born baby.
Meanwhile, an official statement issued by RIMS media cell on Sunday, 4.30 pm, informed that Sanjita has pulse reading of 124 beat per minute, blood pressure of 108/66 mmHg, and SpO2 level of 95 per cent.
Rate of urine passed in the last six hour was 50-120 ml/hour.
She is on life support system such as ventilator and inotropes (drugs used to control blood pressure).
Her condition remains critical as before and the hospital is providing her best available treatment, the statement said.
