O Nabakishore Singh, Principal Secretary, Commerce & Industry, expressed happiness about the manner in which products from the state, especially traditionally woven cloths, were lapped up at the just concluded 4th ASIAN countries trade fair 2001 at Kunming city in China.
Speaking at a press conference Tuesday in Imphal today after his return from China, Nabakishore said products from Manipur were in high demand during the trade fair.
He led a 9-member team from Manipur accompanied by a team of two from Myanmar to the ASEAN conference in Kunming.
Manipur has arrived as the gateway of East Asia, he said.
During their stay in China, the team from Manipur had a series of discussions with Chinese officials for the improvement of road connectivity and more importantly flight connectivity between Imphal and Kunming city via Mandalay for the purpose of increased trade and commerce.
Nabakishore said communication was a hurdle.
"We will approach Manipur University language department to introduce Chinese as a course so that the people of the state can learn the language," he said.
In one of the meetings with high Chinese officials, they expressed their interest of exporting fertilizers to India, Nabakishore informed.
A car rally between Kunming and Moreh will be organized by China in the first part of 2012, he said.
Seitabhama, an entrepreneur and a chairperson of APEX who also participated in the trade fair in China said that, "given the huge demand for Manipuri products in China, we hope that the government of the state will assist in formulating policy for the benefit of export of Manipur products to China" .
