Drivers' Day observed statewide

The 24th Drivers' Day was observed in different parts of the State by various organizations and associations along with offering floral tributes to the photographs of departed drivers.
Under the aegis of All Manipur petroleum tankers Drivers Union, the observance was held at ISBT, Kuman Lampak along Dingku Road today.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Minister of Consumer Aggairs, Food and Public Distribution Moirangthem Okendro stated that considering the problems being faced by truck drivers in the absence of a proper garage at FCS godown, Sangaiprou, a garage with a capacity of parking 300 trucks at one time and a 150 feet-long resting cum cooking place for the drivers have been constructed.
The construction process would be completed before the commencement of monsoons this year, the Minister assured.
He asked the drivers union and associations to submit a concrete proposal to the government for redressing their grievances and informed that a policy to grant immediate relief to the drivers of the State at the time of unwanted happenings is to be set up soon based on their suggestions and feedbacks.
The Minister acknowledged that since there are no rails and waterway facilities in the State, all the essential commodities of the people are being brought in by the drivers on roads.
So, the drivers are the life of the people and they should be respected and given due recognition.
In spite of the many difficulties faced by the drivers' community, they still carry on their duties for the people of the State.
Therefore, they should not be given any problem during the course of performing their duties, the Minister added.
Presided over by Y Bhupenchandra Ghosh, President of All Manipur Petroleum Tankers Drivers' Union, the function was also attended by MLA T Mangibabu; SI Singh, Senior Depot Manager of IOC and Kh Ibobi, State Level Co-ordinator of IOC Ltd Manipur as Guests of Honour.
Floral tributes were paid as mark of respect to the photographs of the departed drivers on the occasion.Gifts were also presented to families of the drivers who have passed away and also to the retired drivers.
The Drivers' Day was also organized by All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Works Union at the truck parking of Langjing Achouba today where floral tributes were paid to the photographs of 188 departed drivers of the State.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the function, Works and Transport Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar observed that the role of trucks drivers in a state like Manipur where there is no railway, waterways or extensive cargo flight service is immense.
They are taking the responsibilities and risk of the people in their hands.
So, we need to acknowledge the contribution of the drivers.
The function was attended by H Kulamni, General Secretary of All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Works Union; President of the union M Manglem; former Minister N Mangi; ex-candidate O Henry; Deputy Labour Commissioner E Tomba; General Secretary of Transport and Drivers' Council, Ng Haridas as presidium members.
Drivers' Day was also observed under the aegis of Manipur Drivers Welfare Association, Tera Lukram Leirak Machin at Manipur Press Club today with Tombi, Adhyaksha of Imphal East; N Jati, President of Drivers & Transporters Forum and ex-president of AMUCO Ito Tongbram as presidium members.
