Moreh, August 11 2020:
The president of the Indo-Myanmar Workers' Forum, Ningthoukhongjam Pulindro Singh has stated that the ongoing pandemic and lockdown situation has deeply affected the lives of over 700 labours under the forum, forcing them to survive on just one meal a day.
After the imposition of nation wide lockdown on March 10, the Indo-Myanmar Friendship Gate No 1 and 2 had to be closed, thus ceasing business between the two countries.
This in turn has affected the lives of over 700 labours from different parts of the country, he said and added that these labours are living on just one meal a day due to shortage of food and essential items.
To address this issue, Pulindro has requested the Government to allow the Indo-Myanmar Friendship Gate No 1 and 2 to open for a few hours everyday.
This will help the labours with the food problem to some extent, he said.
He also expressed discontent over the distribution of PDS rice in Moreh town saying that the beneficiaries of PMGKAY are allowed only 5 kgs per person while under the NFSA, only 3 kgs is allowed, as against the Government's promise to allot 5 kgs to each beneficiary under both schemes.
He further deplored that the essential/grocery shops in Moreh do not have a price list put up in the front of their shops either, as ordered by the Government.
Vice president of the forum, Ali also stated that the prolong lockdown had left many of these labours with food and essential commodities shortage and .
had approached the forum for assistance.
However, the forum is in no position to provide for the large number of labourers and has requested the Government to extend necessary assistance to them.
