World Mental Health Day observed at different venues

National Health Mission (NHM), National Mental Health Programme and Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch (IPS, MSB) have jointly observed 28th World Mental Health Day under the theme "Mental Health Promotion & Suicide Prevention" at the auditorium of JNIMS, Porompat, Imphal, today.
The observance was graced by Vumlunmang Vualnam, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Manipur cum State Mission Director, State Health Society, NHM as chief guest; Dr S Manikanta Singh, president, IPS, MSB as president and Dr Th Bhimo Singh, Director, JNIMS and Dr P Shyamsunder Singh, Additional Director, Medical Care as guests of honour.
Speaking at the event, Vumlunmang Vualnam said that mental health should be treated with utmost care to live a healthy and prosperous lives.
Stating that there are many psychological factors that contribute to mental illness such as trauma suffered as a child, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, early loss of a parent etc, he appealed all to consult doctors or extend possible help if any of their family members or friends show sign of mental disorder.
Similar programme was also organised by All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) under the sponsorship of Manipur State Legal Service Authority at its office at Cheirap Court Complex, Uripok, here, today.
AMBA, president, Advocate Maibam Nilachandra Singh; vice president, M Karamchand and former president, A Indrakumar attended the programme as dais members while Advocate, Kh Iboyaima and Prof & Head of Psychiatry Dept, RIMS, Dr RK Lenin Singh spoke as the resource persons.
Addressing the gathering, Advocate Maibam Nilachandra Singh said that World Mental Health Day is being observed annually on October 10 under the supervision of World Federation for Mental Health.
Atleast 8 lakh people, particularly from weaker section, commit suicide every year across the globe, he said, adding that the observance aims at raising awareness on preventing suicide through proper counselling and extending help to those in need.
Department of Psychology, Manipur University also observed "World Mental Health Day", today.
The observation began with the release of leaflet by Administrator of MU, Jarnail Singh in the presence of the faculty members and students of the department at his office chamber.
