Imphal, August 10, 2012:
Observing that even if Mary Kom could not bring home the gold medal, her bronze medal nevertheless is an achievement unprecedented in the history of the north eastern region, if not, the country, Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) General Headquarters has expressed dissatisfaction over the state government's announcement of award package for MC Mary Kom for her stellar performance in the Olympic.
In a statement, Vice President (Administration) of KSO Gen HQs Mangcha Baite lamented that when the whole country erupted in jubilation and celebration, the euphoric moment was spoiled by unsavory announcement of the state government.
The government's proclamation to promote her to the rank of Addl SP in the Manipur Police, if she strikes gold was a total embarrassment, as the rank was already conferred to her in 2010 when she won the world championship for a record 5 times.
The Chief Minister had bestowed the honor and also rewarded her with 2 acres of prime land for her dream project of setting up a boxing academy during the state reception accorded to her at Khumanlampak sports stadium.
Furthermore, she was honored by christening a stretch of road in National Games Village in her name as MC Mary Kom Road.
However, not even a single signboard bearing the name is seen till date.
Therefore, these rewards and gestures of the government could be construed as just namesakes.
It is more ironical that no award and incentives for a bronze medal were mentioned in the state government's official announcement right after her victory in the quarterfinals.
Since there is no dearth of award for Mary across the country, the state government's measly reward is something to be ashamed of.
And if Mary Kom so desire, she should be free to choose any better offer that might come her way.
Therefore, in the light of these facts KSO Gen HQs on behalf of the Kuki people urged the Chief Minister to reconsider its publicized reward package for the gold medal, even though the magnificent daughter of the state is coming back with the bronze medal.
The government must reward Mary Kom with the rank of SP or any equivalent position it deemed fit and Rs 1 Crore it had announced for gold medal and also the 4 acres of prime land including 2 acres it has already given to her in recognition of her fifth world champion title.
This will be the most fitting reward that she truly deserves, the statement added.
