Imphal, July 09 2022: Chief minister N Biren has announced to pay Rs 5 lakh each as ex-gratia to families of two people killed during a landslide that occurred in Santing area along Tipaikukh road (NH-102) in Churachandpur district op Friday morning.

Two people were killed and seven others injured when a passenger vehicle (Bolero Camper) was washed down by a landslide at about 6.30 am on Friday near Santing Village in the interior areas of Churachandpur district.

The CM also announced that Rs 50,000 each will be given to those who suffered serious injuries and Rs 10,000 each to those who suffered minor injuries.

Announcing this on his Facebook page, CM Biren also deeply condoled the demise of Baotsaihe and Lalnunjiri in the unfortunate incident as well as prayed for speedy recovery of the injured persons.

"The government will extend a sum Rs 5 lakh as ex-gratia to the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured and Rs 10,000 to those with minor injuries", Biren added.

He also expressed his gratitude to all the villagers who extended help to the victims.

The incident took place along the National Highway-102 between Santing and Saihuan village, about 85 km from the district headquarters.

The passenger vehicle was on the way to Churachandpur from Pherzawl when the incident took place.

The incident reportedly happened when the driver of the vehicle was about to resume the journey after clearing the uprooted trees that were blocking the road, following which a landslide occurred and the vehicle fell into a 100 metre deep gorge.

At least 12 passengers, including two infants, were travelling in a Mahindra Bolero Camper when the landslide hit the vehicle.

The woman passenger who died on the spot was from Sipuikon village.

Apart from the locals who extended help in the rescue and relief work, troops of Assam Rifles also rushed to the spot, and took the injured passengers to its post at Aina Camp and provided emergency medical assistance.

Later, the injured were shifted to the district hospital in Churachandpur for further treatment, said an Assam Rifles release.

Notably, the incident occurred just a week after a massive landslide hit an under-construction railway station in Noney district, killing 49 persons, including Territorial Army personnel, and injuring at least 18 others.

The rescue operation continues to trace the remaining 12 missing persons from the landslide-affected area at Makhuam.

On the other-hand, CM Bi-ren convened a meeting with experts and discussed about construction of a state cultural centre at Behiang in Churachandpur district and a memorial complex for Maichou Taret at Nongmaiching hill.

During the meeting which was also attended by MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, minister L Susindro and MLA Rameshwar, historians and experts, Biren said that the huge state cultural centre at Behiang in Churachandpur close to Myanmar will be constructed at a cost of Rs 3.4 crore and preparation for the same had already been started.

He also said that an amusement park for children will be developed at Songpi village under Tuiboung block and the government is planning to hand over both the projects to the people at the earliest possible time.

He also said that tender process for construction of Henglep road which will be developed with Rs 100 core had been initiated.

The meeting also discussed about construction of a memorial site for Maichou Taret atop Baruni hills popularly known as Khallong.

The meeting also decided to identify the area where the memorial site for Maichou Taret is to be constructed atop the hills where Maichou Taret believed to have breathed their last.

The meeting also discussed about developing a tourist spot near the memorial complex including huts for night-stay.
