MU to have three new courses

Manipur University, which has at present 27 different Departments and other various certificate courses, is all set to introduce three new certificate courses from the next academic session.
The three new courses to be introduced are Sociology, Forestry and Environmental Science and Foreign Language.
Addressing media persons at the Vice Chancellor's Committee Room today, VC of MU, Prof HNK Sharma informed that apart from courses on Korean Language to be introduced.
under the Foreign Language category, the institute has also decided to introduce Thai Language.
For this, representatives of MU have met professors of Surindra Rajabhat University (SRRU) in Surin Province of Thailand.
The outcome of the meeting was positive and a certificate course on Thai language is likely to be offered to the students in six months time.
He further informed that proposals are also in the offing for opening LLM, South East Asian Studies, MA in Human Rights and Duties, MA in Myanmar Studies, Psychology, Home science and Fine Arts during the 12th Plan.
Apart from this, a project proposal of Rs 613 crores for recruiting 110 faculty members and establishment of two constituent colleges of MU would be put up before the UGC by tomorrow.
Regarding the non-existence of a students' union in the University, Prof HNK Sharma said that according to the Manipur University Act, there should be a Students' Council in the University.
But since the students dislike the idea of a Students' Council, proper implementation of the Act cannot be achieved.
As such an application has been submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource Development for converting Students' Council which is mentioned in the University Act into a Student's Union.
If at all a Students' Union is to be established in the University, it would be done under the provisions of Lyngdoh Commission.
