Villagers on the brink of starvation

A large number of villagers are on the brink of starvation after massive landslides have cut off more than 20 villages under Machi sub-division in Chandel, reports our correspondent.
To assess the landslide-affected area, a team of Kuki Chief's Association (KCA) Machi Block, KSO Machi Block and Rural People's Development Federation (RPDF) along with media persons visited the landslide affected areas.
Apart from a portion of Tengnoupal-Sangshak road between Phalbung-Chehlep junction being completely washed away by the landslides, two major landslides extending about 2 kms also occurred near Simang village.
Landslide also reportedly occurred Bongmol-Bongli, Kuljang-Sairel, Machi Lamkai-Samukom, Khoibu Centre-Parengtong/Charawanpham roads.
Briefing media-persons, chief of Molpi (Nungtak) village M Letkhosei Haokip said that around 25 villages of Bongli area have been totally cut off from rest of the State due to multiple landslide which occurred on July 31.Since then, the villagers are on the brink of starvation.
Haokip further said that there is also a problem of electricity and potable water as many electric poles and drinking water sources were washed away by the landslides.
Besides the need for clearing the roads, the villagers are in great need of essential commodities, medicines, potable water and electricity.
The State Government has till date failed to take up necessary step to address the needs of the villages.
