Senapati, February 08 2015:
Even as the tempo of canvassing for the upcoming polls to the Autonomous District Council (ADC) is heating up in the hill districts of Manipur, the United Naga Council (UNC) said today that it will 'uphold' the 3rd Naga People's Convention (NPC) declaration in letter and spirit.
Severance of all political ties with the Government of Manipur and the declaration of the ADC as null and void are two important points of the 3rd NPC declaration.
Meanwhile, there have been confusion among the Naga people whether the UNC will oppose the ADC elections in Manipur hills this time again.
To clear the air of confusion a correspondent from Newmai News Network contacted UNC president Gaidon Kamei on the matter this evening.
The UNC chief did not use the term 'boycott' but asserted that the demand for Alternative Arrangement (pending Naga political settlement) campaign will be concertedly initiated after the Nagas' seed sowing festival Lui-Ngai-Ni (February 15) while upholding the 3rd NPC declaration.
"Any party or individual who might have commented on the ADC polls were their personal views," dismissed Gaidon Kamei.
When asked what could be the mode of campaign or agitation after the Lui-Ngai-Ni the UNC leader said that they will only pronounce it in an appropriate time.
According to the UNC president, the January 24, 2015 memorandum to the Prime Minister will be the basis of their next movement.
In that memorandum, the United Naga Council had urged the Prime Minister to immediately intervene in the Indo-Naga political settlement.
In it, the UNC alleged that the Manipur Government has been suppressing the tribal people in Manipur.
"The communal Government of Manipur, not satisfied with their long years of suppression, oppression and exploitation towards the Naga tribals living in the present State of Manipur, has not given up its persistent attempts to marginalize the Naga tribals and also to grasps our land through its anti Naga tribal policies and decisions under its State Acts, Rules, Orders and Notifications in the name of law and order and induced development.
It is therefore impossible for the Nagas to protect our land, history, time honored institution, culture and identity under the present political system," the UNC memorandum alleged.
