Imphal, October 05 2020:
The people of Leimakhong Chingmang which is under Sekmai Assembly Constituency have urged the State Government to provide adequate security and ensure safety.
Speaking to the media, advisor of Village Development and Protection Committee of Leimakhong Chingmang and former Pradhan of Khurkhul Gram Panchayat, Phuritsabam Jiban said that the situation in the area is volatile following an altercation which broke out yesterday between some youth of Leimakhong Chingmang and youth residing in a village in Kangpokpi district.
He said that a reconciliation effort was made at the village authority level and a meeting was convened at Kounu Lairembi community hall in the presence of a team of Sekmai police.
The reconciliatory bid was however foiled right before the signing of the settlement as some miscreants swarmed the spot and started hurling stones incessantly forcing the reconciling parties and the police team to flee, he narrated.
Portions of the hall were also damaged due to the attack, he said.
The attack at a time when the issue was almost settled, that too at a place of worship is highly condemnable and unfortunate, he said.
The Government should take up necessary measures to ensure safety of Leimakhong Chingmang villagers and defuse the tension, Jiban said while praying that such an incident does not occur in the future.
In the meantime, Section 144 of CrPC has been clamped in the area by the District Magistrate, Imphal West.
