Jiribam, August 05 2024:
The Bengali community raised grave concern on the ongoing violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Jiribam.
A joint press note by the secretary of All Jiribam Muslim Welfare Society and All Jiribam Muslim Socio-Economics and Cultural Development Organisation requested both the Kuki and Meitei communities to cease all forms of violence and refrain from firing in Bengali-inhabited areas.
'Let us work-together-to-restore harmony and ensure the safety of all our communities', said the press note.
Referring to several instances of gunfire in areas inhabited by Bengalis (Lalpani, Champanagar, Rashidpur, Balijuri etc) of Jiribam district, the above Muslim bodies said that these incidents have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, particularly among students and women who are the most vulnerable in such situations.
'A particularly alarming incident occurred on August 2, 2024 at about 10 pm when a bomb fell at the house of Sanaul Haque of Lalpani.
Fortunately, the bomb did not explode, averting a potential tragedy.
However, the psychological impact of such events cannot be overstated', it added.
Urging all parties to prioritize peace and dialogue over violence and aggression, the bodies cautioned that if such incidents continue, the Bengali community will be compelled to take strong action against those responsible.
