Man convicted for sexual assault

A Noutuneshwari Devi, Sessions Judge Senapati, convicted one 26 year old Ngangom Shantikumar for sexually assaulting a minor girl on February 9, 2012, in Senapati district.
The judgment order was announced in an open Court today after it was kept on reserved from February 19 following the final hearing of the trial against convict Ngangom Shantikumar alias Santakumar (26) s/o Rajen of Sekta Mayai Leikai.
The case was on against the convict from February 10, after a complaint was lodged by the elder brother of the victim before Senapati district police, stating that his younger sister had been raped by some unknown individual on previous day, at around 1.30 pm.
The complainant also mentioned that the culprit tried to kill his sister using a sharp weapon due to which the victim sustained laceration marks on her face, neck and body.
During the course of investigation it came to light that the crime was committed by the convict Ngangom Shantikumar after which the convict was arrested by a joint team of Senapati district and Imphal East district police, from Muirei bus stand along Imphal Ukhrul road, on February 17, 2012.The IO of the case, after the completion of the investigation, submitted the charge sheet to the concerned Senapati Court and charge was framed by the Court on November 8, 2013 under section 307/326 and 376 of Indian Penal Code for the trial.
During the hearing of the trial, the Court heard examined 15 prosecution witnesses.
During the final hearing of the case, the APP of the State submitted before the Court that the statement given by the Medical Officer as one of the prosecution witness, made it clear that there were signs of sexual assault upon the victim.
Furthermore, in her statement, the victim clearly mentioned that it was the convict who forcibly removed her cloths and when she started shouting, the convict covered her mouth with his hands and the convict strongly pressed against her throat due to which she lost conscious.
Upon regaining consciousness, she found herself naked.
The Court, considering all the evidences from the prosecution witnesses and the material on records, convicted Ngangom Shantikumar for sexually assaulting the minor and fixed March 7 for the sentence hearing of the case and to announce the quantum of punishment.
