Chandel District observes World No Tobacco Day

Chandel, June 03 2019:
District Health Society, Chandel & National Tobacco Control Programme, Chandel observed "World No Tobacco Day" at DRDA Hall, DC complex, Chandel, under the theme "Tobacco and Lungs Health", today.
The function was attended by SDO, Chandel Loktongbam Leander; CMO, Chandel, Dr Serthani Serbum; Dy Superintendent of Police, Chandel, Bimolchandra Singh and Chairman Japhau Bazaar, HL Lordson Anal as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking as the chief guest, SDO Loktongbam Leander spoke about tobacco control laws COTPA 2003, and diseases caused by tobacco products.
While interacting with the students and the teachers present in the function, he asked them to spread the awareness about the ill effects of consuming tobacco products on ones health.
DNO, NTCP, Chandel Dr Joyson M Monsang said that tobacco is the leading cause of preventable deaths and diseases in the world and added that 35% people from all over India, and 55% particularly in Manipur used tobacco products according to GATS 2016-17 (Global Adult Tobacco Survey) .
He further maintained that more emphasis are being given to the young generations, especially students to create more awareness regarding the matter.
Dy Superintendent of Police, Chandel, Bimolchandra Singh spoke about the roles of police and the law enforcement agencies under the COTPA.
Chairman Japhau Bazaar, HL Lordson Anal said that JBA will extend all possible help in creating awareness and act as an ambassador for the cause.
The function was also attended by students and teachers of various schools and other stake holders of Chandel district.
Later, an awareness rally was taken out from DC complex to Japhou Bazaar as part of the function.
