Imphal, December 30 2021: The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to send the necessary recommendation for granting ST status to Meetei/Meitei before the notification for the Assembly elections is issued.

In the memorandum, STDCM also urged the Chief Minister to grant permission for an audience to discuss the subject.

Saying that Meetei/Meitei desperately deserve Constitutional safeguard to protect their ancestral land and identity, as provided to indigenous communities in Manipur and other North East States, the STDCM claimed that various projects such as railways and the resultant accompanying economic activities will disastrously impact the State's land and people unless appropriate Constitutional measures are taken up to offset such impacts.
