Imphal, June 29 2012:
Imphal City Police today foiled a group of students belonging to All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) from staging a sit-in protest in front of Raj Bhavan here.
AMSU had earlier announced its decision to organize sit-in as part of the agitation being spearheaded by North East Students' Organization (NESO) across the region pushing various demands.
A group of AMSU members including its secretary and president made a sudden appearance near the Raj Bhavan gate and tried to stage protest there when a team of the City Police arrived at the scene and dispersed them.
The police also tore down the banners and placards held by the students.
Talking to mediapersons, AMSU President Th Suresh decried the action of the police as unfortunate.
He alleged that India has been treating the people of Northeast as second class citizens.
NESO has raised a series of demands which include enactment of education and human resource development policies, establishment of an education commission for the Northeast region, repeal of AFSPA, formulation of a comprehensive policy to stop influx of illegal migrants and refugees in the region, preserve indigenous population of the region, redressal of economic and infrastructural development, and protection of environment of the region among others.
