VDF personnel injured in police action; over 15 held

Imphal, March 25 2015: Some Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel were injured and over 15 others rounded up by police when agitating VDF personnel were stopped from marching towards the Chief Minister's residence to submit a memorandum.

The confrontation took place after a meeting of All Manipur VDF Welfare Association (AMVDFWA) held on Wednesday at THAU Ground, Imphal with the support of various civil society organisations.

The meeting strongly condemned the Government's 'passive' response to the demands made by AMVDFWA for their welfare.

The association had set March 25 as the deadline for fulfilling its demands which include a hike in pay scale; disbursement of salaries pending for 13 months; appointment of a separate SP for VDF and providing service security.

Later, the disappointed VDF took out a rally but they were stopped by the police at Khoyathong ABC Godown area.

A scuffle broke out between the VDF personnel and the police forces.

The Police had a tough time making attempts to foil the VDF from proceeding forward.

Police had to fire tear gas shells and rubber bullets during which some VDF personnel were injured.

After the incident, AMVDFWA strongly condemned the police action.

The association also demanded unconditional release of those arrested besides asking the authorities to bear the medical expenses of those injured in the incident.
