Imphal, July 23 2011:
With vehicles of government departments failing to pay taxes for more than eight years, the Transport Department had numerous times issued Tax Demand Notice to the defaulter departments.
However the different departments of the state government are not paying any attention in the matter and turned a deaf year to the Transport Department's call to pay taxes.
While the Transport Department is taking up strict measures to collect taxes from private and other business vehicles from the civilians by imposing heavy fines under the Motor Vehicles Act 1989, the department has failed to collect taxes from the government departments nor it has able to take up any action against the default departments.
A total tax amount of Rs 69,50,431 are laying unpaid by the 48 different departments of the state government.
Out of them, the Public Works Department (PWD) who alone has more than 150 vehicles has a due amount of Rs 14,26,326 which made the department the topmost among the 48 default departments.
In order to collect the due tax amounts from the government departments, the Transport Department have issued Tax Demand Notice to the various departments in October last year.
However the departments are not doing anything to pay their taxes which resulted to the loss of huge state revenue.
The transport department will again also be sending Tax Demand Notice to the government departments to pay their due tax amounts within the fiscal year 2011-12 .
A revised tax rate of the registered vehicles of the state under the Transport Department is already implemented in the state from April this year.
Under this revised rate, tax for cars has been increased.
Vehicles which cost upto Rs 3 lakh will have to pay one-time tax of 3 percent of the total cost of the vehicle whereas the tax rate is 4 percent for upto Rs 6 lakh, 5 percent for upto 10 lakh, 8 percent for vehicles which cost more than Rs 20 lakh.
Taxes for freight trucks will be RS 1200 a year for one ton, Rs 2480 for 3 ton, Rs 3760 for 5 ton and Rs 6960 for 10 ton.
