Imphal, January 22 2021:
Tribal women vending yongchak (Parkia speciosa) at the northern side of Khuman Lampak apprised that low yields this harvesting season due to pest attack is driving the price of yongchak up.
It is reported that about 30-40 women from Kamjong and Ukhrul districts regularly vend yongchak at the Dingko Road.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, one Ashim Tangkhul from Kamjong district said that women from the two districts have been selling tree beans in bulk at the said site for many years.

"Though last year's monsoon was favourable for plantation, the growers failed to produce parkia up to their expectation due to the pest attack," she narrated adding that witnessing such misfortune during the pandemic is truly unfortunate.
Beans of the yongchak harvested this season are also not as large as the one grown in the past, she continued.
Saying that this low yield is driving the price of parkia up, the vendor added that the price of yongchak they are selling varies according to the size of the pods.
Three pieces of parkia pods with handsome beans are sold at Rs 100 and the price decreases according to the thinness of the beans, she said.
Another vendor, Jenny Khurai claimed that insecticides seem to be harmful to parkia plants as production often declined a few years after decontamination.
