Awareness on conservation of forest held at FEEDS, Hengbung

Kangpokpi, December 19 2018: A one-day awareness programme on 'Conservation ofForest with special reference to rare, endangered and threatened (RET) plants' was successfully conducted at Vigyan Sadan Hall, FEEDS campus, Hengbung in Kangpokpi District today.

The awareness programme was organized by Foundation for Environment and Economic Development Services (FEEDS), Hengbung while it was sponsored by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Changes (MoEF & CC), Govt of India.

Dr Tashi Wangdi, Director and Member Secretary, Indian National MAB Committee, E, MoEF & CC, New Delhi, Govt of India; Somorjit Salam, IAS, DC Senapati; and Siba Veimy, Divisional Forest Officer, Senapati District, Manipur graced the occasion as Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and Functional President respectively.

Haokholet Kipgen, President, FEEDS, Hengbung also attended the programme apart from many other scientists, staffs and employees of FEEDS and its various departments.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Tashi highlighted about possible conflicts with habitat of man and wildlife and showed various examples from around the world on ways to prevent and mitigate such conflicts by finding alternate source of livelihood for persons living within the biosphere.

He applauded the work taken up by FEEDS to conserve natural flora and fauna within its capacity with the help of funds from MoEF and other sources while welcoming proposals from any individuals or organizations that has path-breaking ideas to ease nature from plastic pollution.

The programme was given a different perspective with Somorjit Salam presenting real life experiences of water scarcity in hill areas resulting from extensive deforestation.

The IAS officer also called for an immediate action against deforestation and act towards long term sustainable development that would benefit the present as well as the future generations.

Corroborating with the views of Somorjit Salam, IAS, DC Senapati District, Haokholet Kipgen, President FEEDS exemplified the work and dedication of the villagers of Hengbung in their effort to bring back a dried stream to perennial water flow through afforestation through the years.

Siba Veimy emphasized on the role of community participation in conservation of forest land and introduced about various schemes that the Government offers to communities acting towards sustainable growth and coexistence.
