Imphal, June 18 2011:
Despite persisting threats to the integrity of the state, the unityof the different communities residing in the state will remain intact, said AMUCO president KT Rehman speaking at the "Unity Day" observance function held at THAU ground today.
The AMUCO president observed an increasing worry in the minds of Manipuris residing in various parts of the Northeastern region with the unending GoI-NSCN-IM talks.
The unending talks have created disharmony among the different communities, he added.
He said, amidst the disturbing factors to the unity of the state, AMUCO will continue to work to strengthen the unity of the people in the state.
AMUCO believes that the united strength of the people of the state will remain intact despite repeated instigations from outside forces, the president said.
Let us leave the narrow minded ideology of thinking only for one's own community and build a united strength to make Manipur a land where all sections of the people live together peacefully in harmony.
He reminded that AMUCO is an apex body of various organisations and working in the interest of all communities.
"Unity" is the backbone of the organisation, he said calling for building a strong united Manipur to fight all forces challenging the territorial integrity of the state.
He said that the permission given to NSCN-IM general secretary Th Muivah to visit Manipur by the Centre in May last year and the recent opening of a unit of a political party based in Nagland were all part of a divide and rule policy of the Government of India.
The Centre is indulging in caste based politics in the region.
Central leaders are trying to infiltrate their caste based politics in the northeastern region which does not have a caste value system, Rehman alleged.
People in this region have their own indigenous culture and traditions.
India as the largest democratic country in the world should not indulge in caste based politics to create disunity among the different communities, he warned.
Like in the previous year AMUCO observed the "Unity Day" at THAU ground in remembrance of the violent uprising of June 18, 2001 in which 18 protestors lost their lives.
People in their thousands converged to take part in the observance function and offered floral tributes to the 18 "martyrs" at the function site.
Irabot Foundation's president Th Iboyaima, Thadou Tribe Council's general secretary Thangkhao Haokip, president of the Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, president Manipuri Sahitya Parisad Assam, Kunjamohon, president of the All Manipur Muslim Development Organisation, Ayub Khan and president of the Senior Citizens for Society, Manipur, N Biren were in the podium in the public meeting.
Leaders of various civil organisations talked on the occasion and emphasized on the need for strengthening the unity of the state to fight the challenges against the territorial integrity of the state.
