Properties worth lakhs of rupees have been gutted in two unrelated fire incidents in Chandel district and Imphal yesterday.
In a suspected case of arson, the Principal's office of Maha Union Govt Higher Secondary School, Chandel was set ablaze by unidentified miscreants last midnight .
Besides a handful of computer sets, some cash amount and documents were also said to be gutted in the fire, sources said.
Independence Day was celebrated at the school premises yesterday.
Sources said that a public ally against the suspected arson attack is likely to come up within a couple of days.
Meanwhile, Education Minister M Okendro has strongly condemned the torching of Maha Union Govt Hr Sec School office building of last night.
Terming the act as 'dastardly' the Minister said it was very unfortunate that such act is perpetrated against a learning centre.
He appealed all concerned to refrain from committing such acts in future.
Vehemently condemning the incident, Ng Benithan, President, Sirti Upa Ruh (Monsang Tribe Union) said the uncalled for act deserves condemnation from all quarters.
He also said Maha Union Higher Secondary School is the oldest and the lone Govt Higher sec school in the area that caters the educational need of the surrounding areas.
In an unrelated incident, fire broke out at the head office of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) here last night around 7.40.Sources said the fire broke out at a room where petroleum products were stored.
The store keeper was away to see illuminating lights displayed on the streets in connection with Independence Day celebration when the incident took place last night.
The fire was put under control with the deployment of 8 fire tenders along with fire personnel of the Fire Services dept.
The value of properties damaged by the fire could not be established immediately.
