12-hr bandh on Tiddim road called off after assurance

The 12-hr bandh which began from 6 am today, called along Tiddim road by JAC Against the Declaration of Bird Sanctuary denouncing the indifferent attitude displayed by the authority concerned to their demands to withdraw the proposed plan to build a Bird Sanctuary in an area covering 103 hectare of land in Loktak Lake encompassing some area of Thinungei Mamang, has been lifted today after MLA Oinam AC L Radhakishwore gave assurance to hold talks with State Govt to address their demands.
It may be mentioned that the JAC has been agitating to revoke the order issued by Additional Chief Secy, Suhel Akhtar (Forest & Environment, Works), GoM on January 3 this year, to build a Bird Sanctuary at Loktak Lake extending over to some part of Thinungei Mamang and, in this regard, number of dharnas and rallies were took out and also submitted scores of memorandum.
Besides, on February 10, the JAC also notified to call 12-hr bandh on Tiddim road today.
The bandh supporters, majority of them are fishermen of Thinungei village, took their protests to street since 6 am today and blocked Imphal- Churachandpur road along Tiddim road.
Soon, friction between agitating public and police personnel which were present in large number broke out forcing the police personnel to resort to using tear gas and smoke bomb to disperse the mob which were blocking road at Moirang and Ningthoukhong.
The police team and CDO were led by Additional SP, Bishnupur District LO Manihar.
However, five bandh supporters including female members suffered injuries in the commotion and were admitted to Bishnupur District Hospital for treatment.
Later, spark by the injuries, the public of Thinungei intensified their agitation.
The situation was later pacified after MLA Oinam AC, L Radhakishwore assured the bandh supporter to arrange a meeting with the concerned minister to address their problem by February 19.Movement of vehicles resumed at Tiddim road after the MLA gave his assurance with the protestors after 10 am.
