Imphal, December 15 2017:
Construction of Tongjei Maril or Old Cachar Road is making little progress and many quarters have started questioning the qualitative aspect of the same work .
A joint team of the Nungba Kendra Citizens Forum and media persons travelled from Bishnupur to Khoupum Tampak recently which forms a section of the Old Cachar Road .
During the same trip, representatives of the forum alleged that the road construction is making little progress and the way the road was constructed was not up to the desired standard .
Nungba Kendra Citizens Forum chairman Aphuna Gangmei said that construction works of Bishnupur-Rengpang road and Bishnupur-Tupul road was officially opened by then Chief Minister Okram Ibobi on September 8, 2014 .
Both the roads connect NH-37 and NH-150 and Bishnupur-Joujangtek section forms a common section .
One can reach Rengpang from Joujangtek if one goes in a particular direction and one can reach Tupul if one goes in the opposite direction .
The cost of Bishnupur-Rengpang road (69.52 Kms) is 147.71 crore and it is funded by the North Eastern Council.
While Keystone Infra Pvt Ltd has been executing the project, PWD is the implementing agency .
For construction of Bishnupur-Tupul road which is 50.80 Kms in length, Asian Development Bank invested Rs 114.70 crore through the DoNER.
Two companies namely ABCI and DRAIPL have been constructing the road under the supervision of PWD .
Even though the two road projects should be completed within three years, large sections still remain incomplete, Aphuna Gangmei said .
Black topping has started from Joujangtek toward Khoupum Tampak but the bitumen layer looked very thin .
Concrete drains have not been constructed and there are still some sections where the road is yet to be expanded .
Concrete drains have been constructed along Bishnupur-Joujangtek section but the road expansion work near Laimaton hill is making little progress, Aphuna remarked .
Aphuna also appealed to all concerned authorities to look into the matter and take up necessary action.
