Mentally Challenged woman raped by kinsman

In a very despicable incident, a 22-year old mentally Challenged woman was raped by a married man already having three children at Tangkham Awang Leikai under Imphal East district.
The accused man identified as Laishram Joykumar (41) s/o Laishram Tomba of Khundrakpam Awang Leikai under Heingang Police Station but presently staying at Tangkham Awang Leikai, is also said to be a distant relative of the victim.
Joykumar, who works as an assistant teacher at Pangei Shining School, has been taken into custody by the police following a complaint lodged by the family members of the victim.
According to the family members of the victim, Joykumar raped the mentally Challenged woman at her own house at Tangkham Awang Leikai at around 11 am on October 11.The incident took place while the victim's mother, who is a Maibi (priestess) was away attending a Lai Haraoba programme at Thangmeiband and the father was away to throw net for catching fishes in a nearby river.
After committing the crime, Joykumar also allegedly threatened the victim with dire consequences, if she revealed out his misdeed to anyone.
After medical examination of the victim conducted at RIMS confirmed the rape, the family members filed a complaint to the police.
Based on the complaint, Joykumar was arrested by the Heingang police from his house yesterday and he was later produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal East district which remanded him to police custody for six days.
Meanwhile, representatives of Relief Centre for Welfare of Differently-Abled Persons, All Tribal Disable Union, Manipur and All Manipur United Disable organization visited the victim's house today and met her.
Decrying the rape of the mentally retarded woman, the representatives of the three organisations have demanded the authorities concerned to award death penalty to the accused rapist.
