Raghumani elected chairman of newly constituted IMC

N Raghumani of Congress was elected as chairman of the Imphal Municipal Council after the newly elected councillors had taken oath as councillors of the next five year term of the council yesterday.
In the election to choose the chairman and vice chairman of the council held today Ragumani was unanimously elected as chairman and another Congress councillor, Thambaljao Phaomei as vice-president of the council.
The path to elect Ragumani as chairman and Thambaljao without voting was cleared after NCP councillor, Baleshwor and Nimai Sharma withdrew their nomination papers for the posts of chairman and vice chairman respectively.
Imphal West district DC, K Radhakumar declared the election of the chairman and vice chairman officially ahead of the commencement of the first seating of the council at its office today.
Speaking at the first meeting of the councillors, both the newly elected chairman and vice chairman appealed to the councillors to co-operate with them for a smooth functioning of the IMC and in taking up developmental works in the areas under the council.
They also assured of discharging their duties in an unbiased manner and without classification between the councillors of both the ruling party and the opposition.
Later, the newly elected chairman and vice chairman were felicitated in a reception function held at Congress Bhavan.
Speaking at the felicitation function, MPCC president Gaikhangam expressed happiness with the unopposed election of congress councillors as chairman and vice chairman.
He further asserted that it is the tradition of the Congress party to abide by the decision of the higher authority of the party.
Meanwhile, sources said that before the election for the Raghumani as chairman and Thambaljao as vice chairman, meetings of the Congress councillors were held two times.
CM Ibobi and MPCC president Gaikhangam also participated in the meetings which aimed at choosing cocensus candidates for the two posts for the Congress councillors.
