Kuki womenfolk stage sit in protest

Jiribam, October 12 2020:
Protesting against the implementation of the Scheduled Tribe and Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forests Rights) Act, 2006, the Hmar Women Association along with the United Chief Committee, Hmar Inpui, Kuki Student Organisation and Hmar National Union Jiribam District staged a sit in protest today near the Fire Service office, Jiribam.
The demonstration was also participated by several women leaders of tribal CSOs.
A memorandum with 4 points signed by tribal CSO leaders was also submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Jiribam.
The joint secy in charge of Hmar Inpui General Headquarters Benjamin Shakum stated that the sit in protest was organised to express their disapproval towards the Scheduled Tribe and Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forests Rights) Act, 2006 which is to be implemented, adding that the tribal village in Jiribam has been in existence for centuries and that they have been paying the hill house tax for approximately 100 years.
