Weaving looms distributed at relief camp

Imphal, March 12 2025:
Weaver Service Centre, Porompat on Wednesday distributed weaving looms to the displaced women taking shelter at Akampat Relief Camp.
The programme was conducted under the aegis of the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) and sponsored by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
Speaking on the occasion, Weaver Service Centre Porompat, Deputy Director, Priyadarshi Daripa said that NHDP is a significant initiative launched by the Government of India which aims to support handloom sector and improve the lives of handloom weavers by providing financial assistance, technology upgrades, marketing support, and infrastructural development.
"Under the NHDP, financial assistance is provided to eligible handloom organisations/workers for technological upgrades.
The Government of India bears 90% of the cost of technological upgradation items and the beneficiary contributes the remaining 10%", he added.
He shared that proposals for assistance were sent for three relief camps located in Imphal East district namely Urup, Akampat and Sajiwa.
Highlighting that the Ministry of Textiles has approved the proposal, he said, "72 looms have been distributed at Sajiwa and 55 looms at Akampat.
19 looms will be distributed at Urup soon".
He asserted that looms and accessories will be provided to a total of 146 beneficiaries from Imphal East district.
Lingjel Thoibi Self Help Group general secretary B Asha Prem Devi informed that out of the 55 looms, 26 looms have been distributed at the Langol Relief Camp and the remaining 29 looms are distributed at Akampat Relief Camp.
