Imphal, February 11 2020:
Despite objection by many for its potential threat to the ecosystem, a large number of locals settled in and around Sendra have come out in support of the creation of Loktak inland waterways.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, president of Loktak Lake Tourism Development Cooperative Society Ltd, Moirangthem Ibosana claimed that the inland waterways will not, in any way, affect the livelihood of the fishermen who are dependent on the lake.
Instead, the inland waterways will facilitate cheaper transport/connectivity between Sendra, Ningthoukhong, Phubala, Thanga, Karang, Khordak, Nongmaikhong and Mayang Imphal, he added.
Further stating that people opposing the creation of the inland waterways need to view the issue from a different perspective as well, he explained that the society had 16 motorboats (all approved by the Government) and these boats are helping ferry tourists who visit the State to see the lake, apart from feeding the families of the operators.
