Imphal, November 10 2014:
In an effort to ensure that education is well promoted and the students benefit the maximum, the Maring Students Union (MSU) has taken serious note of the alleged disparity of educational institutes between the hills and the valley in the State, reports NNN.
In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister, O Ibobi today, MSU alleged that the Government has failed to regularize the contract teachers of schools in the hills recruited in 2006 though there is an acute shortage of teachers in all the educational institutions functioning in the hills.
According to president of MSU, Koruphun Tantanga, many schools in the hills are defunct due to acute shortage of teaching staff.
The contract teachers have been rendering long and painful service though they are paid a meagre amount.
The memorandum also mentioned that the Directorate of Education had conducted physical verification of the teachers in November, 2011 out of which 772 teachers were found genuine, according to records.
However, since no steps have been taken up so far by the authority concerned to regularize these teachers, the Union feels that this is an injustice towards the tribal people by the Government leading to robbing the tribal students of their fundamental right to education.
The Union also said that the Government's practice of hiring and firing long suffering contract teachers is quite reprehensible and should not be continued in the future.
The Union went on to add that proper education is the backbone of a progressive society.
As such, it fervently urged the Government to intervene and bridge the gap between the hill and valley so as to pave the way for equal development in all spheres.
