World Sight Day observed, Vision Screening Camp held

Joining with the rest of the world, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed World Sight Day 2024 under the theme, "Prioritize Child Eye Health" at the General OPD Complex today.
The event organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, RIMS, Imphal was graced by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director; RIMS, Imphal; Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, Imphal; Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam, Dean (Academics), and Prof Y Chingsuingamba Meitei, Head, Department of Ophthalmology among others, said a release.
Addressing the gathering, Prof G Sunil Kumar underscored the RIMS's commitment to serving the society through its advanced facilities and high-tech equipment.
He also addressed the growing concern over the rising prevalence of vision problems among children due to excessive use of digital devices, noting that approximately 25% of the world population is affected by vision-related issues.
"Parents should take an active role in protecting their children from the harmful effects of prolonged screen exposure", he added.
Later, the Director released a short video focusing on the importance of child eye health and ways to prevent vision impairment.
Lions Club of Imphal
In connection with the observance of World Sight Day, Lions Club of Imphal in association with Lions Eye Hospital & Services Trust organised a Vision Screening Camp at Nabalini Astham Children Home for Girls, Ghari Awang Leikai today.
During the camp, a medical team led by Dr L Chaoba Singh carried out vision screening for 88 girls and 5 trans-girls staying at the 3 Homes managed by Nirvana Foundation, Imphal namely Nabalini Astham Children Home for Girls, Nirvana Home for Girls and Transpride Home.
11 children were found in need of spectacles during the screening, said a release.
Addressing the gathering, Lions Club of Imphal president O Ranjit said that the spectacles and necessary medicines for the children will be handed over to the management by Lions Club of Imphal on October 13 during its regular meeting.
Dr L Chaoba said that early detection of symptoms of any eye disease and giving appropriate treatment is of utmost importance.
"If timely treatment is given to children, the chance of saving eyesight is very high.
If the eye problem is kept untreated for a long time, then due to disuse atrophy there is almost no chance of vision recovery with any treatment procedure", he added.
Past district governor Dr W Gopimohan said that vision care is the most important focussed project taken up by Lions Association world-wide since Helen Keller requested members of the Club to be the "Knights of the Blinds" in 1925 .
