Health Minister moots mental hospital in State

Health Minister D Korungthang has stated that he would start consulting relevant authorities in order to set up a mental hospital in the State under JNIMS.
He was speaking during a World Mental Health Day 2016 observation at IMA Hall, Lamphelpat which was organised by Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch.

While highlighting the need for a mental hospital in the State, Korungthang stated that he would initiate due process to set up such a hospital in the State.
Doctors must be proud of their profession and they are often seen as saviours by sick people.
As such, they must take utmost care while diagnosing and treating patients, said the Minister.
He then decried the practice of choosing preferred places of posting by doctors through bribery.
He pointed out that there is acute shortage of health care facilities in many remote areas of the State.
Dr Heramani said that people were reluctant to disclose mental health problems but things have changed today.
It would be quite beneficial to the people if there is a mental hospital in the State.
Dr Heramani also highlighted the need to create mass awareness about mental health and related issues.
The World Mental Health Day was also observed at the BB Paul Home for Mentally Retarded, Mongshangei under the aegis of the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) and the All Manipur Nupi Marup.
MSLSA member secretary RK Memcha, All Manipur Mentally Handicapped Persons Welfare Organisation president RK Promosija and the All Manipur Nupi Marup president M Shakhi attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
