Awangbow Newmai inaugurates cultural programme of NWU

In continuation of the ongoing silver jubilee celebration of the Naga Women's Union(NWU) that began yesterday, the cultural regale of the programme was inaugurated by Awangbow Newmai, MLA, 52 A/C (S/T), Tamei, Tamenglong, who is also the president of Naga People's Front, Manipur as the chief guest in the presence of several Naga Civil Society Organization leaders.
Speaking as the chief guest of the function, Awangbow Newmai stated that women played as the mediator in any quarrel or fight in the past.
"Mother of a family plays the role of a mediator between the father and the son and during the period of head hunting , women were the mediator who returned the head that had been won in the war", the MLA said.
Stating that women took the toughest role in a society, the MLA asserted that he salutes the women for the important roles they played in any society.
Though they had not been rewarded properly for their roles, their services to the society could not be denied, he said urging all to respect one another to bring peace and progress in the land.
The chief guest later opened the cultural regale during the programme where women from different tribes of the State showcased their skills of aged old traditions.
In her welcome note, SK Tabitha, vice president, NWU stated that the celebration would continue to linger in their memory for years to come.
Naga Women's Union was established in 1994 to promote and protect the rights and dignity of women and to ensure security and sustainability among them as well as to strengthen the solidarity, cooperation and capacity building of Naga women in the State and beyond, she continued.
Stating that the union has firmly withstood the trials of time in its 25 years of existence, she asserted that the union is reportedly engaged in a wide array of projects like gender sensitization, human rights, leadership capacity building, environmental issues, awareness campaign and other issues related to women to elevate the lives of Naga women.
United Naga Council president, Kho John in his greetings stated that many women of the region have excelled in different fields.
Stating that education is the key factor to solve any issue, he added that gender inequalities can also be removed only through education.
During the programme, cultural song and dances were performed by the volunteers/members of Maram Naga Union, Inpui Naga Women's Union, Anal Sinnu Ruwl, Aimol Numies Waar, Poumai Naga Naotoumai Me and Tangkhul Shanao Long.
