Corruption catches up, four state police men suspended

Imphal, April 09 2012:
A police officer and three other constables of the Narcotics Cell, Imphal West, have been suspended from their respective service over alleged involvement in letting free of a truck laden with Red Sandalwood after extorting money from the driver.
Procurement of Red Sandalwood is an illegal act in Manipur and the state government already imposed a ban in this regard.
The Police Officer, who has been placed under suspension, is identified as one W Ibocha.
Interestingly, was transferred as Inspector, CAR just today.
Earlier, he was in charge of O/C Narcotics Cell, Imphal west.
The other three constables, who too have been axed, are identified as Ch Vikram (Constable number - 0101197), M Ranan (Constable number - 0101429) and Ch Dinachandra(Constable number - 064009).All three of them belong to Narcotics Cell, Imphal West.
According to reports, a team led by an Inspector of Narcotics Cell, Imphal West waited for arrival of the truck laden with prohibited Red Sandalwood, after getting specific information.
Later when the truck came, the team halted it for checking.
However, the truck was allowed to leave after the police detained one man coming in a vehicle behind the truck when he approached the police.
The man was identified as Md Matlik (30), s/o late Ahmad Hussain of Lilong Khunnou.
He was also a truck driver.
The driver rang up his family and told them to bring some money for his release.
Later the family members came along with a sum of Rs 75,000.The police refused to take the amount saying that it was too little and demanded Rs 1.3 lakhs.
The family members then informed their local MLA about the incident.
After the MLA came to the police station and negotiated, the driver was released.
The whole incident not only reached the ears of the high officils of the Police Department, but also came to the notice of Home Minister Gaikhangam.
Consequently, the four police personnel have been placed under suspension today.
A Departmental inquiry has also been ordered into the incident for initiating major penalty.
Meanwhile, Th Shanti, who was the Inspector of CID Special Branch has been transferred as O/C of Narcotics Cell, Imphal West while O Mangoljao, O/C CAR, Imphal West has been transferred to the CID Special Branch.
