Imphal, January 08 2018:
The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union will be organising the annual Drivers' Day on January 14, in which the union will also reward the most reliable driver with a cash prize.
In Manipur, the drivers have been playing a crucial role in transporting the essential commodities on the State's lifelines, the two National Highways.
However, it has been a matter of life and death for the drivers with many of them losing their lives in the line of duty.
On January 14, the union will be paying floral tributes to 251 such drivers whose lives were cut short in the most tragic ways.
The function will be held at the Inter-State Bus Terminus.
It is a commemoration of the drivers' movement that was held on January 14, 1990 at the Koirengei Airfield in protest against the maltreatment of drivers.
Ever since the day has been observed as the Drivers' Day.
In a press conference held prior to the function, general secretary of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union Maimom Anil Meitei called for all the families of deceased drivers to come for the observation on January 14 .
Maimom Anil mentioned that the most reliable driver will be rewarded on this day with a cash prize of Rs 25000 for 2018-19 .
This cash prize is sponsored by proprietor of the Heirangoithong Services Station, Muhindro.
Drivers can get the forms from the union and apply for the award, the general secretary added.
As part of the observation, Maimom Anil appealed to the vehicle owners and drivers to refrain from commercial activities but take part in the floral tribute on this day.
