Imphal, November 06 2012:
Contrary to the repeated assurances given by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, who is also in charge of Power, to ensure power supply for 20 hours in a day, the power situation in the state has turned from bad to worst.
The situation of power supply in the state capital and its surrounding Imphal Municipal area is currently in its worst state.
The people residing in Greater Imphal area hardly get 5 hours power in a day.
The badly hit areas of Imphal East include those covered by Kongba Sub-Division where consumers are getting power supply for only 1 hour in the morning from 5 am to 6am and for another 1 hour in the afternoon.
During night time, the consumers receive power supply from 7 pm to 10 pm, if it is not a load shedding day.
According to reliable sources in the State Power Department, the power share received by the State earlier from other states has come to a complete halt after the power production level of various projects has dwindled following sho.
However, shortage of water in the project area is only going to get worsened in the near future, thereby increase the problems of the consumers manifold.
The sources further stated that due to worsening condition of power production and supply in the state, the load shedding system prevalent in the state would have to be changed and accordingly, two Executive Engineers have started monitoring
the situation.
Although the power supply all over the state is at its worst condition, consumers in Imphal city where pre-paid metre system has been started are enjoying power supply for 24 hours.
The official source, however, fails to give a satisfying answer to the question raised over unequal treatment to consumers by extending pre-paid facilities to a handful of people and depriving the benefit to others.
Nonetheless, the source expressed optimism that the power situation in the state shall improve when the 400 KV line, which is to be extended from Silchar to Imphal by the Power Grid Corporation of India is made functional and the Paltana Thermal Power Project of Tripura is completed.
By then, the consumers would enjoy 20 hours of uninterrupted power supply, the source added.
