Imphal, September 06 2012:
As the date of deciding the fate of candidates in the Panchayat Election-2012 is approaching fast, electioneering campaign has gained momentum, and it has also given an impact on the prices of various goods including Areca nuts and Betel leaves.
In an independent survey conducted by Hueiyen Lanpao around the city, it came to light that the price of Areca nuts and betel leaves in Khwairamband Bazar has skyrocketed as the workers and family members of candidates make beeline to purchase them.
During the survey, it was found out that the rate of betel leaves has shot up to Rs 400 from Rs 250 per 100 leaves.
In some shops, the price goes up to as high as Rs 500 per 100 leaves.
Interestingly, no one has any compliant over the increased rate as everyone is ready to grasp whatever is there on offer.
It may be noted here that after 99 candidates for Zilla Parishad , one candidate for Pradhan and another 97 candidates for the post of Members were declared elected uncontested, a total of 231 candidates for the Zilla Parisad and 595 candidates for the post of Pradhan are in the fray.
Panchayat Election-2012 is scheduled to take place on September 13 .
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, some of the voters pointed out that the area of jurisdiction for a member is comparatively less in comparison to that of a Pradhan.
So, in a constituency from where a Member is to be elected, there are cases where the voters belong to the same locality or close-knitted families.
Therefore, all the workers and candidates should take precaution while campaigning and canvassing to avoid unwanted incidents.
