Imphal, March 05 2019:
Rigorous construction work is currently underway at the road stretch of National Highway 2 between Koubru Leikha to Senapati.
It may be mentioned that the said road stretch, which is also a part of Asian Highway 1, has been lying in a rather pathetic and deplorable condition since the last few years.
A team comprised of engineers of Bharatia Infra Projects Ltd (BIPL) which is the work agency tasked with the repairing of the road, and representatives of Thadou Students Association (TSA) Sadar Hills, inspected the construction works along the road which is being taken up by the PWD under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), today morning.
Speaking to media persons on the side-line of the inspection trip, BIPL Project Manager Thangjam Mritanjoy said that BIPL will handle the construction of the said road stretch, which is around 75 kilometres, by dividing it into tow parts, package I (Mao-Senapati) and package II (Koubru Leikha-Senapati).
Today's inspection trip is mostly targeted at package II and the work for the said package II stretch which is around 27 km long and which consist of two lanes, consist of construction of pave shoulders and strengthening works.
He continued that works on most part of the road have been completed, including Dense Bituminous Macadan process and only around 4.50 kilometres of road is left unattended.
BIPL is working tirelessly to complete the road before the coming October, he added.
The project also includes construction of crash barriers as well as properly covered drainage systems near the populated towns and areas along the route, he said adding that even though project II does not include construction of drainage, a proposal has been sent to the authority concerned and sanction is being awaited.
On the other hand, work along the package I route (Mao-Senapati) has failed to continue at the desired rate as the area falls under the sinking zone.
Currently, construction of drainage along the road is underway.
Both project I and II are planned for completion by October 2020.Moreover, four additional years are also set aside for maintenance of the road, the Project Manager added.
On the other hand, TSA Sadar Hills social and cultural secretary Thangpimang Kipgen said that they are pleased with the DBM works under package II but expressed concerned at the works regarding the drainage systems.
Manipur and other North East region are blessed with ample rainfall but this poses a huge problem if proper drainage systems are not present.
If quality is not maintained, then the construction works, would have been for nothing and a huge amount of money would go to waste, he added and appealed to the authorities concerned to properly monitor and maintain quality works.
