Congress search for consensus IMC chairman

Imphal, June 03 2011:
"With the Congress party securing the majority in the elections for Imphal Municipal Council (IMC), efforts are on to find a consensus candidate for the post of Chairperson", stated MPCC president Gaikhangam.
In addition to the 14 Congress candidates who were successful in the IMC elections, two independent candidates who supported Congress party have also been admitted in the party.
Out of the 16 elected Congress Councillors, four Councillors have been lobbying hard for the post of Chairperson to gain support of other Councillors through their own MLAs.
The Councillors who are in the contest for the post of Chairperson are N Raghumani (elected from Ward No 13), Thambaljao Paomei (Ward No 25), A Nimai (Ward No 18) and Ph Baleshore (Ward No 5) .
N Raghumani was former vice-president of IMC.
On the other hand, tenure of the existing Council will expire on June 13 .
Meanwhile, a meeting of the MPCC office bearers was held at Congress Bhavan this afternoon where formation of a new Council and reception of the elected Councillors were the main agenda.
The meeting presided by MPCC president Gaikhangam decided to organise a reception function for the elected Congress Councillors on June 11 .
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Gaikhangam said that efforts were on to find a consensus candidate from among the elected Councillors for the post of Chairperson.
