World AIDS Day observed, rally taken out

District AIDS Prevention and Control Committee (DAPCC) Imphal West observed World AIDS Day with "Communities make the difference" as the theme at TG Higher Secondary School today.
Speaking as the chief guest of the function, Deputy Commissioner Imphal West as well as Chairperson DAPCC Imphal West Naorem Praveen said that around 37.9 million people with HIV/AIDS are there across the globe and added that it is high time for the public to take up a mass movements in order to uproot HIV/AIDS from the State.
The chairperson stressed on the need of conducting extensive awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention to the public and especially to the youth and students to prevent the virus/ condition and to remove the social stigma around people with HIV/AIDS.

Chief Medical Officer Dr H Kula said that people have been observing World AIDS Day since December 1, 1988 with new theme every year while adding that organising such function has helped generating awareness and sensitizing the public.
Now, many people with HIV/AIDS are taking part in social activities and sports, he added.
Scientists and experts are working tirelessly to eradicate and prevent HIV and AIDS.
Unfortunately, no vaccine or drug has been developed so far, he added.
However, active and continuous participation of all communities is necessary in raising the right kind of awareness, he said.
He claimed that, so far, 375 people have been detected with HIV/AIDS out of 70,553 people taking HIV/AIDS test and added that 16 pregnant women came out positive from a total of 15381 .
Principal Tamphasana Girls Higher Secondary School Ayekpam Sangeeta and Deputy Director, Medical Care, Directorate of Health Dr S Gopal were also present at the function.
A rally raising awareness about World AIDS Day was also taken out.
