2014 begins with two blasts

Imphal, January 02 2014:
In a tale tell sign that Manipur's tryst with peace, howsoever one wishes for, is still a distant dream, twin bomb blasts which occurred one after the other within minutes rocked Imphal on the first day of New Year, 2014 itself.
Of the two powerful blasts triggered by remote controlled improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the first took place at Sapam Leikai along Imphal River Bank under Singjamei police station at around 5:49 pm while the other along Nambul river bank just behind Manipur College, also under Manipur College, at around 6:02 am.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the twin blasts.
Both the IEDs were planted on roads along the river bank.
Soon after the blasts, police and central para military forces rushed in and cordoned off the area for conducting a massive search operation after blocking all exit points.
But there was no report of any arrest made.
No individual or group has also claimed responsibility for the blasts so far.
On the other hand, at least four deaths have been reported in separate incidents on the New Year's Day in Manipur.
One worker was found death under mysterious nearby a pond of one contractor L.Kumar of Kakwa near Kakwa Pukhri Achouba in Imphal to whom he was currently employed with 12 other workers.
The deceased has been identified as N.Dhiren (28) son of Birangol of Khumbi Ethai Barage Road who was employed as a worker at L.Sunil's place for the purpose of constructing a godown.
A Joint Action Committee (JAC) has been formed in connection with the suspicious death of Dhiren and demanded to produce the culprits involved in the alleged murder of the deceased within 3 days.
Talking to mediapersons at Manipur Press Club, K.Kiran, JAC member said that the government needs to produce the culprits and punish.
The government should also look into the family's matter and provide proper compensation to the deceased family members.
If it fails to do so, then the JAC will resort to all forms of stringent agitation to meet the demands, he warned.
The JAC has resolved not to claim the dead body until the culprits are produced.
In another incident, a road accident claimed one man's life when his two-wheeler Honda Activa collided with a Santro car near YK College, Wangjing under Thoubal police station.
The deceased person was identified as N.Romen (30) son of late Ibomcha of Samurou Makha Leikai.
He was taken to Shija Hospitals where he succumbed to his injuries.
It was known that he was driving the two-wheeler carrying his wife Ibethoi (28) and daughter Lija (15) who are still undergoing treatment at Shija Hospitals.
In another related road accident, one old man, namely Khumanthem Kheda (57) of Ghari Lamkhai was knocked down by a bike when he was walking at Ningombam Lamkhai under Singjamei police station at around 3:30 pm on January 1 .
The biker identified as L.Loken (47) of Utlou Mamang Leikai also died on the spot.
The dead bodies of both the deceased have been claimed by family members after post mortem.
