Locals block road, demand immediate release of arrested individual

Irate locals blocked the Imphal-Churachandpur road at Bangla, Torbung GP, under Moirang PS today.
According to a source from the spot, the locals were protesting the arrest of one Moirangthem Ngongocha (49), who runs a hardware and fertiliser shop at Bangla bazaar by a team of 25 Assam Riffles posted at Khenjang yesterday at around 5 pm.
Starting from around 10 am today, the irate locals began blocking the Tiddim road demanding immediate and unconditional release of the arrested individual.
The blockade caused immense inconveniences for the vehicles passing along the road.
Protesters also burnt tyres on the road and carried sticks and stones to deter passenger vehicles from going along the road.
Speaking to the media persons, the wife of the arrested individual, Moirangthem (o) Sunita said that her husband used to earn money by driving a tractor.
He started his business after selling off the tractor, she said adding that the authorities have been shifting her husband from place to place and today, it was learned that he was at Churachandpur PS.
When the family members went to the police station, it was found that many unrelated charges had been piled up against her husband, she alleged and demanded immediate and unconditional release of her husband.
On the other hand, one of the protesters, secretary of Torbung Bangla Meira paibi, Pebam Thajamanbi strongly condemned the act of arresting innocent civilians by security personnel without giving any arrest memo and added that the people will continue to launch protest and blockade until Ngongocha is released safe and sound.
However, at around 1 pm, the bandh was cleared by a team led by Moirang SDPO Ksh Shivakanta and normal traffic resumed.
